Although they have spent the last year writing their new full length, it will not see the light of day. Due to conflicting levels of commitment to touring, the boys of Veil Maker have decided to call it quits and move on to other things.
In addition to their performance on May 19th, Veil Maker will have one last show on June 10th. Shortly after their last performance, the band plans to commit to tape live recordings of the songs they have composed over the past year. These will not see a formal release but will be circulated to interested parties. Calvin McElroy of Smorgasbord will be joining the band on bass for these shows and recordings.
A multiplicity of thanks are in order for making this band both possible and a pleasure, including but not limited to: Philip Marshall, Jack Phavone, Real Cardinal, Fields to Flood, G.W. Nichol, Leslie Predy, Sara Dakus, Uncle Skippy, Helder Pedro, The Line Atlantic, Jayden, Garrett, Hey Nostradamus!, Atrophy Manuscript, Oscar Granero, Geoff Hawryluk, Hannes Bezuidenhout, Circle Square/End Credits... the list goes on.
Matt Meeboer and Cecil Frena will continue to write together as both are now involved in a new project, Aurora, along with Nano Uribe (Storyboard), Allan Harding (millions of bands), Aaron Brink (HAW), Janet Chung (HLWE) and Real Cardinal (Comaduster). Look for recordings and some touring from Aurora this summer.
Please come out one last time and sing along with predominantly instrumental music. All attendants of this show will receive a free copy of Veil Maker's do not be afraid EP.

it's phil's forum so it's his call, but i see no reason to scrap it so long as people continue to use it. just to post irreverent stuff, and all that.

I feel the need to diverge from my usual non-seriousness here and say that I am deeply saddened that the band will not be continuing. Veil Maker allowed me to make music that I truly believed in, music that I enjoyed listening to as well as playing. Call me egotistical, but I still pull out "Do not be afraid..." occasionally and give it a spin.
First I need to thank anyone who's ever come to one of our shows. So many of you were our friends, and it never seemed to me like I was performing for you, it was just another chance to hang out and share a glimpse into the musical side of our personalities.
I'm grateful for everyone who I got a chance to work with: Jack, James, Real, but especially for CJ. I've never had a chance to work with somebody so talented, versatile and prolific. It always seemed that he lived and breathed Veil Maker, and yet he had the same commitment to Snic at the same time. Not many people can do two bands at once, and fewer still can write the bulk of the music for two bands. Yet CJ has never been anything other than modest. I didn't always agree with every part he wrote, and he didn't always agree with what I wanted to do, but he'd always listen to/respond to my objections/suggestions. The EP, and the music we played live, was a compromise somewhere between what everyone thought they wanted, but always ended up better than any of us thought it could be. Compromise is the wrong word. I never felt that I was giving up anything when the other guys changed my mind about a song.
I barely know Matt, but he's been a huge part of the band since I left, so he deserves a mention. I knew he was going to work well from the moment I started teaching him my parts. He picked them up immediately, and from what I've heard of the old songs since then, he's put his own spin on those parts and made them his own. Before I left, CJ had hinted at a new direction for the band, and Matt certainly helped them head in that direction.
I have no doubt that anyone from Veil Maker who is continuing on with other projects will find success, and keep churning out mind-blowing music and (with any luck) killing bears.
I had planned on being at the May 19th show anyway, but I will definitely be attending both of the last two shows.
Since the question was asked, the website/forums will be here for as long as people use them. Certainly the bulk of discussion has often been non-VM related, so I still see reason to keep the forums around.

We can't forget Hannes's "mascotiness" (it's a word trust me (even if it isn't)).
Ya, it's gonna be odd for me, CJ and I have been in this ever changing band of whatever you want to call it (ganglion, the peanut man, veil maker) since probably 98, give or take a year.
So it will deffinatly feel to me like the final stage of "that band". The band I learned everything I know from and would never have taken drumming as far as I did had I not been in it.
Also I'd just like to thank everyone ever involved with this band, from the early days in Cj's parents basement, Adam Eustaces backyard, Ryan Johnsons garage, that guy Scott who recorded us in his basement, mud hutters, Lilo's (lol) all the way to Real and powersound, the one and only tour with feilds to flooders, people that seemed to genuinely be impressed by us, people that seemed to be genuinely dissapointed with us, and whoever is reading this at the moment.
See you at the last shows, and if we don't, see you around somewhere.

I will have a much longer post later.
The green origins of Veil Maker lie in The Peanut Man. It is this amalgamation of zany Sherwood Park kids that introduced me to the Edmonton music scene. I had been friends with them all before the band, but my life took a new direction after that, and I basically have Veil Maker to thank for this.
I am deeply saddened by this turn of events, but I understand it. My memories are dense and deep. One final memory before I run off to work: jump-starting my truck three million times and getting lost in the boonies to arrive at a graduation party and find Jack so drunk he could barely stand and play on that hill in the dark. Then we had to jump-start our way back.

Thanks to everyone who supported the band in any way. I'm going to miss playing with james and jack (even though he was gone for most of my time in the group) and will continue playing with CJ in Aurora. I hope any bands I may play with in the future are as easy to work with as VM was.

Too much fun and memories with these guys! I vastly enjoyed playing with these guys for the past....how ever long it's been. I, too, was kinda shocked to hear this news, but what's done is done, and I wish the best to future projects from everyone. I didn't really get a chance to say bye to many people when I left.....oh by the way, I live in Winnipeg now. But I'm grateful to have met a lot of you through The Peanut man and Veilmaker. So thanks to everyone who came and supported us, thanks to Matt and Phil, who I enjoyed playing with, even for a short while, but especially James and CJ, of whom I've known for over 18 years! As far back as James banging on buckets, have I loved playing music with these two. My main memories include....(sorry if this is long) -Our first music video on Adam's shed -CJ's frustration with me trying to sing Rage. -Jack's drunk ordeal at the aftergrad party. -The many different show we didn't want to play. -Harvest Moon shooing by CJ, and people actually leaving! -9 straight hours in the GREEN room with James, leading to over 100 games of quarters, and prank AA calls! -How the Peanut man name really came about.("Look at this book guys...we should name ourselves The Peanut Man, Haha.....") -The Mudhut show with Screwtape Lewis in the blizzard where no one was there, and Hannes sang our set!
So many others, but you get the point. It's been an awesome road of shinanigans. Thanks for the fun boys and girls!

Phil, I think you, me, and my buddy Fred were the only people there that night. SO empty! hahaha
Also, I'm still chapped that I missed that Lac La Biche show.
I still have a long post coming, but I'm incredibly lazy right now.
