do not be afraid was reviewed in this week's Edmonton Journal capsule music reviews!

With such a wordy album title, it's easy to be afraid of the results. There's no need to panic at the disco. While Veil Maker's prog-rock adventures are the sonic equivalent of a 16-word  title, the local virtuosos are like boy scouts - willing to take listeners by the hand and guide them through lush forests of chiming melodies and xylophones, tunnels of shifting time signatures and seas of stormy guitars, screams and thrashing drumes. Every song feels like a 10-hour journey, but you arrive feeling exhilarated, not exhausted. "I'm covered with mosquitoes, but beaming all the same," CJ Murdoch sings on Coral Landing. His vocals - often reminiscent of Maynard James Keenan fronting A Perfect Circle - are sensual and languid, but don't always sound like they're properly miked or mixed into the morass. That's really the only problem with Afraid.

4/5 stars

Edmonton kids, don't forget about the Sidetrack Cafe show this Tuesday!

A Perfect Circle is a step up from tool. I actually like APC.  This is a nice review, I'm pleased.

Taxonomy of Veil Maker comparisons:

Tool < APC < Pelican < Mogwai < Oceansize < Aereogramme

I think the Aereogramme comparisons are actually the closest, even though we had never heard them we we recorded the EP.  Man I hate tool.

oh yeah, if we extended the comparisons beyond print reviews, our taxonomy would be even better.  when i have access to my notes, perhaps i will expand it!

it's not an evaluation of which band is better than another, but rather which comparisons are closer to veil maker.

for instance, aereogramme is clearly a worse band than mogwai, but they do sound more like veil maker on a comparative basis.

I understood the flow chart.  That was my point.  But I was being a goofball, so it doesn't matter.
